White House Recognizes UC Santa Cruz Center for Integrated Research

The Center for Integrated Research (CISR) was recognized by the U.N. Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, Environmental Research Institute, and the White House Council on Environmental Quality for developing new software focusing on developing coastal resilience. The award was announced during the United Nations Climate Summit on September 23, 2014.

The Coastal Defense Plugin developed by CISR is incredibly popular and in-demand. It quantifies how natural habitats like oysters, coral reefs, marshes, mangroves, beach dunes, sea grass beds all protect coastal areas by decreasing wave induced erosion and inundation. It uses standard engineering techniques to quantify the reduction of wave height and wave energy in the presence of these natural habitat markers.
