April 22nd - Walk to Class Challenge Day!

Walk to Class Challenge Day will take place on the UC Santa Cruz campus on Tuesday, April 22nd to promote walking as a viable and sustainable transportation mode for cross-campus travel, to reduce UCSC’s carbon footprint and to improve individual health.

The Campus Sustainability Plan and Blueprint for a Sustainable Campus both contain visions and goals for a more sustainable campus. The transportation section of the CSP calls for 75% of cross-campus travel to be made by human-powered modes and to engage students in choosing more sustainable modes of transportation. The Blueprint calls for the creation of a Walk to Class Challenge Day.

Every student is welcome and encouraged to participate in the Walk to Class movement!

Registration begins Tuesday, April 1st. Students can sign up at http://ucscwalk2class.walkertracker.com.

All participants will take a quick survey upon registration and the first 100 students to sign up will receive an event T-shirt and pedometer! Upon completion of the Challenge Day, all participants will take a brief post-event survey and be eligible to win a $50 VISA gift card.

Marine Conservation Class Studies Water Conservation in Dorms

Students in Professor Don Croll's Marine Conservation class don't just learn about water conservation issues by reading studies--they design and implement their own studies. This fall, the focus of one team project in the course was Santa Cruz's local watershed and the relationship between students in the dorms and the water in our community. One student working on the project, Travis Trinh, shared with us what the project was about.

The purpose of the study was to support more sustainable use of freshwater on campus. He explains: "The reason we decided to focus on this subject was because Santa Cruz has been historically a very dry county. These past few years have had a marked decrease in average annual rainfall," he said. "This year alone has been one of the driest we've had in 5 years. Since the majority of our water comes from local watersheds, our water consumption is highly dependent on rainfall." The Campus Sustainability Plan for 2013-16 states that "Water delivered to the campus from the City of Santa Cruz comes entirely from local sources that are vulnerable to drought periods... UCSC uses about 6% of the total area water demand and serves as the largest single water customer in the city's water service area" (p. 20). According to a Santa Cruz Sentinel article from the end of 2013, Santa Cruz has a new low rainfall record of only around 5 inches of rainfall for the entire year--60 percent less than the previous record from 1929. No doubt we're in a serious drought.

With very little rain, conserving water becomes even more important than most years. At UCSC, that means evaluating how to effectively reduce the amount of freshwater used in the residential dorms, which currently accounts for 49% of all UCSC main campus freshwater use (Campus Sustainability Plan 2013-16). To do so, the Marine Conversation class set up an experiment in the Crown and Stevenson dorms. Two buildings in each college had passive approaches, like flyers and posters, explaining how much water we consume each day and tips for reducing our water use. Two other buildings had a more active approach, shower timers that allowed students to time themselves in the shower voluntarily. Two other buildings had no passive or active treatments applied. Representatives from the project met with each college's residential advisers to explain the project and encourage them to talk to residents about it.

Travis explains: "Our hypothesis was that more direct approaches of sustainability (giving them shower timers) would influence a more positive behavioral change concerning freshwater sustainability. By measuring residential water consumption from month to month we discovered that there is evidence that when students are given tools to accomplish sustainable actions, there are more likely to do so. However, because we were working in such a short time frame (2 and a half weeks) we could not gather more substantial data."

Though the project was cut short by the length of the quarter system, Travis and other students in the class will be continuing the project in a more robust form in spring quarter 2014, partnering with other campus sustainability efforts. Drop Your Own Drip (DYOD) is another water conservation program on campus through the Student Environmental Center that uses mock water bills to demonstrate to students how much water they're using. Travis says he and his teammates are open to a partnership with DYOD if it makes sense logistically to combine efforts, and they are hoping to move ahead with planning this quarter.

Travis acknowledges that at UCSC, "water use has been reduced over the years to great effect, but that doesn't mean we should stop trying. Water is a valuable resource that is not infinite. This should be clear to everyone in California since Governor Brown just declared California to be in a state of drought emergency." We each have control over how much water we consume each day, and with projects like this and others on campus, we collectively have the power to encourage others to be more mindful of water use.

Campus Sustainability Planning & Blueprint for a Sustainable Campus

Want to share your thoughts, visions, and project ideas related to sustainability at UCSC? The Blueprint for a Sustainable Campus and the Campus Sustainability Plan are two campus-wide sustainability goal and vision documents that are currently being updated, and input is needed from everyone for both plans.

The Campus Sustainability Plan is a document that identifies goals for UCSC to incorporate sustainability into all aspects of campus operations. Each topic area has targeted goals for the coming years, and it is time to revisit and update the document so we are seeking input from staff, faculty, and students. The Blueprint for a Sustainable Campus is overseen Student Environmental Center, and it is a document encompassing current visions of students, faculty, staff, and community members who share their ideas and goals for the future of UCSC during a series of Blueprint Breakout sessions throughout the year, culminating with the Earth Summit event in spring. There will be two Blueprint Breakout sessions this month on November 14 and 28 in the College 8 Red Room from 5:30-8:00 PM, and staff, faculty, and students are encouraged to attend and provide input. Seeking Sustainability Theater Arts Consultant: Apply immediately!

The Sustainability Theater Consultant will work with the Sustainability Office's Education & Outreach Team this year to develop a 3-5 minute theatrical sustainability skit to perform for the freshman core classes in order to educate students about sustainability at UCSC and encourage them to get involved and thinking about sustainability in their own lives. Theater experience including directing, performing, and writing required, and experience working with other students who have little-to-no theater experience is ideal. Strong organizational skills required. No knowledge of sustainability or environmental studies necessary, but an interest in learning about sustainability and promoting it to the campus is important. Estimated 10-15 hours/week, competitive pay.

October Campus Sustainability Plan Workshops

Want to participate in creating new goals for the Campus Sustainability Plan? October is the month for topic planning workshops!

What is the Campus Sustainability Plan?
The Campus Sustainability Plan is a document that identifies goals for UCSC to incorporate sustainability into all aspects of campus operations. It represents the campus’s first comprehensive effort to build a cohesive, phased strategy for the future. Individuals from across UCSC’s administrative and academic divisions helped create it. By working together, they helped raise awareness about the challenges and opportunities of creating a more sustainable campus. It's time to revisit this document and develop new goals for the coming years.

Get Involved 
Workshops are being held this month to start drafting goals and objectives for each topic in the new Campus Sustainability Plan for the years 2013-2016! The workshops will consists of all the staff and faculty members of each Topic Working Group, as well as any students who are interested in participating. The Working Groups are eager to include the student voice as much as possible!

If you are interested in participating, here is the information regarding the Topic Planning Workshops scheduled throughout October.

Student Job Opening: Zero Waste Team Seeking Program Associate

UCSC has a goal of reaching Zero Waste by the year 2020! As of 2011-12, UCSC successfully diverted 63% of waste from the landfill. There is still a large amount of landfill waste that could be reduced, reused, repaired, recycled or composted instead. Bike Smart Seeking Cyclists for School Bicycle Rodeo Events

Love cycling? Come share your passion with the youth of Santa Cruz County. Bike Smart, an Ecology Action Bicycle Program, is seeking enthusiastic cyclists of all abilities to assist with their school bicycle rodeo events. Capitola Commission on the Environment Seeking Youth Member
The City of Capitola Commission on the Environment (COE) is seeking one youth member, aged 18-30, to represent the youth voice of our community. Meeting once per month, the COE advances sustainable planning, policy, and projects in the Capitola community. The youth representative can expect to gain experience in municipal government planning and policy formation, engage in public service projects, and participate in networking opportunities with local government leaders. Volunteers Needed for Santa Cruz Open Streets - Sunday, Oct. 7

Santa Cruz Open Streets is a free community event happening Sunday, October 7 from 9 AM - 1 PM on West Cliff Drive. The idea is to create a 2-mile temporary street park for people to bike, walk, and recreate in a safe, fun, festive, and traffic-free environment. Lots of volunteers are needed to bring this exciting new event to the community.
