Chancellor's Undergraduate Internship Program: Deadline February 12
CUIP provides on-campus internships in programs and departments throughout the campus, oftentimes working with sustainability organizations and the Sustainability Office. Interns work with a mentor and take a leading role in a project. A 2-unit leadership seminar class is required year-long. A scholarship of 8,200 dollars is paid towards the intern’s registration fees for the academic year.

Want to gain field experience in beautiful wetland areas? Volunteers Sought for March for Climate Leadership: February 7
On February 7, thousands of Californians are gathering in Governor Jerry Brown’s longtime home of Oakland to say that we need real climate leadership in the face of the drought. Across the state wells are drying up, more than a dozen cities are in real danger of running out of water, and there’s no question it’s being made worse by climate change. The Drop Your Own Drip campaign within the Student Environmental Center is conducting a survey about water conservation efforts at UCSC. The campaign aims to use this data to determine possible project ideas for the future.

Marine Conservation Class Studies Water Conservation in Dorms

Students in Professor Don Croll's Marine Conservation class don't just learn about water conservation issues by reading studies--they design and implement their own studies. This fall, the focus of one team project in the course was Santa Cruz's local watershed and the relationship between students in the dorms and the water in our community. One student working on the project, Travis Trinh, shared with us what the project was about.

The purpose of the study was to support more sustainable use of freshwater on campus. He explains: "The reason we decided to focus on this subject was because Santa Cruz has been historically a very dry county. These past few years have had a marked decrease in average annual rainfall," he said. "This year alone has been one of the driest we've had in 5 years. Since the majority of our water comes from local watersheds, our water consumption is highly dependent on rainfall." The Campus Sustainability Plan for 2013-16 states that "Water delivered to the campus from the City of Santa Cruz comes entirely from local sources that are vulnerable to drought periods... UCSC uses about 6% of the total area water demand and serves as the largest single water customer in the city's water service area" (p. 20). According to a Santa Cruz Sentinel article from the end of 2013, Santa Cruz has a new low rainfall record of only around 5 inches of rainfall for the entire year--60 percent less than the previous record from 1929. No doubt we're in a serious drought.

With very little rain, conserving water becomes even more important than most years. At UCSC, that means evaluating how to effectively reduce the amount of freshwater used in the residential dorms, which currently accounts for 49% of all UCSC main campus freshwater use (Campus Sustainability Plan 2013-16). To do so, the Marine Conversation class set up an experiment in the Crown and Stevenson dorms. Two buildings in each college had passive approaches, like flyers and posters, explaining how much water we consume each day and tips for reducing our water use. Two other buildings had a more active approach, shower timers that allowed students to time themselves in the shower voluntarily. Two other buildings had no passive or active treatments applied. Representatives from the project met with each college's residential advisers to explain the project and encourage them to talk to residents about it.

Travis explains: "Our hypothesis was that more direct approaches of sustainability (giving them shower timers) would influence a more positive behavioral change concerning freshwater sustainability. By measuring residential water consumption from month to month we discovered that there is evidence that when students are given tools to accomplish sustainable actions, there are more likely to do so. However, because we were working in such a short time frame (2 and a half weeks) we could not gather more substantial data."

Though the project was cut short by the length of the quarter system, Travis and other students in the class will be continuing the project in a more robust form in spring quarter 2014, partnering with other campus sustainability efforts. Drop Your Own Drip (DYOD) is another water conservation program on campus through the Student Environmental Center that uses mock water bills to demonstrate to students how much water they're using. Travis says he and his teammates are open to a partnership with DYOD if it makes sense logistically to combine efforts, and they are hoping to move ahead with planning this quarter.

Travis acknowledges that at UCSC, "water use has been reduced over the years to great effect, but that doesn't mean we should stop trying. Water is a valuable resource that is not infinite. This should be clear to everyone in California since Governor Brown just declared California to be in a state of drought emergency." We each have control over how much water we consume each day, and with projects like this and others on campus, we collectively have the power to encourage others to be more mindful of water use.

Drop Your Own Drip Competition Has Begun!

Student Environmental Center Campaign Drop Your Own Drip is proud to announce that they sent out their first monthly mock water statement to the apartment residents in February, and the competition has begun! These statements will be a compilation of the water usage within each apartment building. The water bills officially kicked off the campus-wide Drop Your Own Drip competition with prizes going to the college that reduces the greatest percentage of water per person. Students in the apartments, keep a lookout for these and remember to keep conserving!

Carbon Fund Awards Announced

The Carbon Fund Committee is pleased to announce it has awarded over $30,000 to six projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions on campus and in the surrounding Santa Cruz area. The following projects received funding:

1.     The Santa Cruz Green Wharf Lighting Retrofit team, led by graduate student Tiffany Wise-West, will install LED lighting on the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf, continuing to make Santa Cruz a model in green technology use.

2.     Three undergraduates from UCSC’s IDEASS class will work with at-risk youth from Natural Bridges High School to build two bike generators. Students will learn aspects of mechanical and electrical engineering as well as the energy usage of everyday appliances and electronics. They will use this information to makes changes in their personal lives and to hold events to teach others to do the same.

3.     A team of chemists and economists will work together to improve the BLEST machine, which is used to convert waste plastic into bio-diesel. The ultimate aim is to use the innovative technology to reduce UCSC’s non-recyclable plastic waste stream while providing biofuel for use in the campus fleet.

4.     In collaboration with the Student Environmental Center, Drop Your Own Drip works with students who live on-campus to reduce water consumption by sending them monthly mock water bills. The building with the lowest water bill receives prizes and a celebratory party.

5.     TAPS and the City of Santa Cruz have teamed up with students from IDEASS to conduct a bike route quality and safety index in order to determine and prioritize areas needing improvement.

6.     A group of programmers is developing a new smart phone application that will show on-campus residents how much energy their building is consuming and inspire them to make changes in their behavior.

Dropping Your Drip and Water Conservation

Think about this for a minute: Each of us has a direct, visible, tangible impact on water use in our everyday lives. Water is something we need, touch, see, feel, drink, and use every single day, and each of us has opportunities multiple times throughout the day to conserve this precious resource. 

Here are some reminders about how to conserve water. Read a more complete list on the Drop Your Own Drip campaign website.

Kitchen:

• No dishwasher? No problem! Instead of leaving your tap running while washing each dish, plug up both sinks and fill them with water instead – one soapy, one for rinsing.
• Same goes for rinsing veggies as with dishes: fill up a bowl of water to wash your veggies instead of wasting a bunch of it when you keep the tap running.
• Use fewer dishes so you don’t have to wash as many.

Bathroom:

• Turn off the tap when brushing teeth, shaving, washing your face and hands. 
• Take fewer showers. Going to be home all day on the weekend? Maybe you don't really need a shower that day. Be conscious of when and why you're showering.
• Or take shorter showers. Reduce your shower time by 30 seconds each day for a week, or aim to take no longer than 3 minute showers.
• Place a large rock or a milk container full of sand in the tank of your toilet. Placing objects in your toilet’s tank displaces water, thus reducing the amount used per flush.

Laundry: 

• When hauling down your stuff to the laundry room, make sure it’s worth it. Wash your clothes only when you have a full load. 
  
• Reducing the frequency of your loads of laundry will save some serious H2O. You can wear those jeans one more time.
• Wash your clothes in cold water. Simple as pushing a button.

For students who live in the apartments on campus, get ready for a super fun, sustainability and water-saving competition starting February 4! Drop Your Own Drip, a campaign of the Student Environmental Center, is a student-led competition in which campus apartment residents receive simulated monthly water statements, which educate all on-campus apartment residents about their monthly water-use while encouraging conservation.

In addition to reducing overall water use, each resident is challenged to use no more than the target-level of daily water-use of 20 gallons per person. The competition will reward the college residents from one of the ten main apartment complexes on campus who successfully reduce water-use per capita the greatest percentage.

The 2012 Education for Sustainable Living Program (ESLP) 5-unit class project has been adopted by the Student Environmental Center (SEC). That means that there are exciting new ways to earn credit through the the ENVS department and be involved with facilitating the annual campus-wide water-use competition. Interested? ESLP is currently seeking students with the desire to design their own courses ranging from environmental to social justice issues. They are also looking for 2-unit or 5-unit interns interested in doing community outreach and graphic design. Join the Kresge Natural Foods Co-op

The Kresge Community Natural Foods Co-op is a non-profit student-run food store located on the south side of Kresge College. It has been a Kresge College tradition for over twenty years, supporting small farmers, the UCSC Farm Project, and the Kresge Organic Garden. While anyone can buy food at the Food Co-op, members receive a discount. The Co-op operates as a collective and a variety of membership options are available. Special pricing is available on bulk orders. Come in for groceries, lunch, snacks, hot coffee, tea, or just to spend time with your friends. Drop Your Own Drip (DYOD) has found a new home!

The 2012 Education for Sustainable Living Program (ESLP) 5-unit class project has been adopted by the Student Environmental Center (SEC). That means that there are exciting new ways to earn credit through the the ENVS department and be involved with facilitating the annual campus-wide water-use competition. Interested? The UCSC Campus Natural Reserve has a new Facebook page!
The Campus Natural Reserve provides outdoor classrooms and living laboratories for students and faculty in the Environmental and Biological Sciences (and beyond!). Students can literally walk outside their classroom and study nature in nature. If you're interested in learning more about the Campus Natural Reserve, like their new Facebook page for updates.

Ithaca College Online Sustainability Leadership Certificate: Session Begins October 11
Offers the chance to credential sustainability work through single seminars or a six-seminar sustainability leadership certificate. All work is completed online. Participants will learn to assess their organization's green policies and practice, communicate sustainability initiatives and evaluate best practices. New online seminars begin 11 times each year. The next session begins October 11. Discounts are available to AASHE members. Upcoming seminars include "How Green is Your Organization: Sustainable Policy and Practice" and "How Green is Your Organization: Sustainable Infrastructure." Most Ithaca sustainability seminars are now GBCI (Green Building Certification Institute) approved. Find out more here.

IDEASS Sustainability Program Spaces Still Available - Apply Now!

Are you an innovative, entrepreneurial, and self-motivated student seeking opportunities to put ideas about sustainable design, social change and environmental stewardship to the test? Impact Designs: Engineering and Sustainability through Student Service is a new team-based internship program on campus designed to create opportunities for students to work on local (primarily off-campus) sustainability challenges with community partners or industry sponsors.
