UCSC Farm Produce Pop-up Thursdays from 10 am - 3 pm
Come and enjoy the UCSC Farm Produce Pop-up on Thursdays from 10am to 3pm at the Quarry Plaza! Food Systems Working Group will have a variety of vegetables and flowers from the UCSC CASFS Farm and select fruit from the Downtown Farmer's Market. They are now accepting EBT/CalFresh! The purpose of the pop-up is to bring the farmers' market to UCSC for students and to increase access to healthy and affordable food for all. UC Natural Reserve System Field Studies Summer Program, California Ecology and Conservation Summer Program: Deadline February 3
The UC Natural Reserve System is now accepting applications for the Summer 2017 Field Studies Program: California Ecology and Conservation. Applications are due on February 3rd. Students from across the UC system have gained strong independent scientific research skills while immersed in the training grounds of the UC natural reserves, from Big Sur to the Mojave Desert, from coastal redwoods to California grasslands to high altitude bristlecone pines. Santa Cruz New Tech Meetup: December 7 at 6 pm
Join the Santa Cruz New Tech Meetup community at Cruzio & Ecology Action Green Building in downtown Santa Cruz (877 Cedar Street). Learn about hot new technologies and mingle with 250+ fellow entrepreneurs, investors, bloggers, and tech enthusiasts. This event is always packed, so be sure to RSVP early. Doors open at 6:00pm, presentations start at 7:00pm. Entry fee is $10, and $5 for students with valid ID (pay at the door), and includes food, beverage, and live music.

Sun-Work Rooftop Solar Energy Training: December 10 & 17
A free 3-hour training session about rooftop solar energy will be offered on Saturday, December 10 from 9 am to 12 pm in San Jose and Saturday December 17 from 2-5 pm in Berkeley.  They're being sponsored by SunWork, a Bay-Area nonprofit that installs rooftop PV systems on small-energy-footprint homes with the help of volunteers. Santa Cruz Permaculture Design Course: January 1 Early Bird Deadline
Permaculture is an ethically based whole-systems design approach that uses concepts, principles, and methods derived from ecosystems, indigenous peoples, and other time-tested systems to create human settlements and institutions. This course includes the internationally recognized 72-hour curriculum, augmented by an additional 38-hours of hands on practice and field trips. Plus, folks have the option to camp on site each weekend, and build community around the fire! School for Field Studies Environmentally Focused Study Abroad Opportunities
SFS creates transformative study abroad experiences through field-based learning and research. Their educational programs explore the human and ecological dimensions of the complex environmental problems faced by local partners, contributing to sustainable solutions in the places where we live and work. Free workshops & trainings with Post-Landfill Action Network
The Post-Landfill Action Network (PLAN) cultivates and educates the student-led zero waste movement and informs students about the waste crisis, equipping them with the necessary skills and resources to implement solutions about waste into their campus communities. UC Santa Cruz is a PLAN member school, which gives us free access to resources and support from PLAN, including workshops and trainings focused on student leadership and how to effectively reach zero waste. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program: Deadline February 2 
This is a six-week program at Howard University that helps prepare undergraduate students for careers in international affairs. It includes two for-credit academic courses, a professional writing seminar, visits and meetings with foreign affairs professionals in a wide range of government and non-governmental organizations, and professional development activities. The program will run from mid-June until late July and encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service and those with financial need. Zero Waste & Sustainability Outreach Efforts in Action at OPERS Fest

UCSC's numerous sustainability organizations were well represented at OPERS Fest this year on September 20, with students tabling about topics such as sustainable food systems, water conservation, native plant restoration, natural history, seed saving, waste reduction, sustainable engineering, and more. 

Behind the scenes, our very own Zero Waste Team and OPERS student staff were hard at work ensuring that waste from the event was disposed of properly. The Zero Waste Team projected before the event that as much as 98% of waste from OPERS Fest could be diverted from landfills. The survey conducted after the event revealed that actual waste diversion was near that goal, with 97% of waste diverted into compost or recycling instead of the landfill!

These UCSC students took a sustainability pledge to reduce their plastic waste by always using a reusable water bottle. The purpose of the sustainability pledge is to get people thinking about ways they can further incorporate sustainability into their daily lives. It's a pledge to make one small change, which can inspire others so that collectively, we're changing the world. You can check out more pledges and pictures from OPERS Fest on Facebook.

Active zero waste efforts like the monitored 4-part waste station at OPERS Fest are instrumental in driving UCSC towards its goal of campuswide zero waste by 2020. Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Sustainability Tent, composted their food scraps, and helped host this fantastic, annual zero waste event!

Global Food Initiative Internships
The UCSC Global Food Initiative team is currently recruiting for two internships. The positions available are the Food Workshop Coordinator and the Food Distribution/Pantry Coordinator, which address student food access and security, as well as overall well-being on campus. Produce Pop-Up Stand Internship
The Food Systems Working Group is looking for two driven individuals to assist with the weekly organic Produce Pop-Up in Quarry Plaza. Responsibilities will include outreach and collaboration efforts, budget and finance planning, and overall assistance in weekly preparation and operation of the Produce Pop-Up stand. Save The Waves Development Research Assistant
The Davenport-based organization Save The Waves has an opening for an intern to serve as the team’s development research assistant for 15-20 hours/week. The intern will support institutional fundraising, donor research, data management, maintaining and improving database functionality, and data integrity to create systems to support fundraising growth and innovation.  Job description available here. Action Education Coordinator for Friends of Community Agroecology Network

Open Streets Santa Cruz: October 9

The Sustainability Office is hosting the Main Entrance to UCSC site for Fall Bike to Work/School Day this Thursday. Green Builder Internship
Long Way Home is seeking interns to learn and apply green construction methods in San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala.  Interns will experience various alternative construction methods, depending on the time of their visit including pounding tires with rammed earth, using bottles stuffed with trash to form fences, creating and placing glass bottle bricks, or harvesting cactus pads for a natural sealant.  Applications are accepted year-round.  Internships may be as short as one week to as long as three months.  No qualifications needed, but experience in construction, education, and Spanish will be valuable.  Cost is $75 per week.  To volunteer, contact Ariel Wexler at Volunteer[at]lwhome[dot]org or apply at the website here.

Long Way Home NGO Internship in Guatemala

ESLP Spring Action Research Teams 2015-2016
This Spring quarter, ESLP is offering 5-unit Action Research Teams, all covering a wide variety of topics. These topics include: The Healthy Beauty Reform, DIY and DIY Culture, Mycology at UCSC, Poetic Visibility, Sustainable Health: Ayurveda, and Eating, Ethics and Environmentalism. Within ESLP, smaller Action Research Teams explore a specific topic within sustainability, facilitated by students in consultation with our faculty sponsors. Garden Cruz: Organic Matters Workshop: Deadline March 1
Learn the art and craft of organic, French-intensive food and flower gardening in this 3-Saturday series. The workshops take place at the Alan Chadwick Garden and UCSC Farm from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, March 5, 12, 19th. This lecture and hands-on workshop series is designed to provide a “toolkit” of the knowledge and skills you need to create a thriving organic garden and optimize water use in your garden and landscape. Pre-registration is required by March 1. UCSC Activist Training Workshop with Green Corps: March 7
Green Corps is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that teaches recent college graduates how to run and win environmental campaigns. The activist training will take place at the College 8 Red Room on Monday, March 7th from 5:00-6:30 PM. It will teach students invaluable skills that would improve any group that is trying to achieve a goal and grow stronger, such as how to raise group visibility and membership (including working with the media), how to strategically plan campaigns (from fundraising, to advocacy, to grassroots campaigns), and how to develop leadership. CURC Webinar: Moving Toward Zero Waste in Office Settings: March 10
A growing number of campuses have found success diverting waste by reorganizing how materials are collected from staff and faculty office locations. This webinar will feature case study presentations from schools that have implemented mini-bin programs and other changes to reduce custodial labor and the use of bag liners, while at the same time improving recycling rates and reducing contamination. In addition to describing operational details, presenters will share steps they took to educate and build support with office workers and other stakeholders. To register, click here.

Lecture Series: Climate Justice Now!: March 28-May 23
As climate change threats grow more severe in the absence of government leadership, artists and activists are inventing creative strategies of consciousness-raising, mass mobilization, and ecologically sustainable thinking and living. This course will feature a diverse array of guest speakers, all leaders in the area of climate justice and cultural politics, and will explore current imperatives for making a just transition to a post-carbon future. Kelp Forest Ecology Summer Course: Deadline April 15
This course is aimed at upper division undergraduates or beginning graduate students interested in benthic ecology & kelp forests. SCUBA certification (Advanced/Open Water II) & all personal diving gear is required (AAUS scientific certification is not required, but desirable). LEED Green Associate (GA) Training: April 21
The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program acts as a method of evaluating buildings based on energy-efficient and sustainable design. The LEED Green Associate (GA) credential is the only entry level sustainability designation and shows that those certified are knowledgeable in the green building industry. A new LEED rating system (v4) was introduced recently and this training course is one of the few that has been updated to teach the current rating system. This training will take place on the UCSC campus on April 21 from 6-10 PM. For more information including cost and how to register, see here.

Women of Wind and Energy WINDPOWER Fellowship: May 23-26
The Rudd Mayer Memorial Fellowships support women to participate in WINDPOWER, attending seminars on current wind energy issues, viewing state-of-the-art technology, meeting others in the renewable energy field, and connecting with employers about potential internships or permanent positions. WINDPOWER 2016 will be held from May 23-26 in New Orleans, LA. The Fellowship covers the cost of travel to and from the WINDPOWER conference site, conference registration (and included meals), and lodging. Find out more on the website here.

U Massachusetts Amherst to Open Online Food & Farming Degree: September 2016
The Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is now offering a fully online associate of science degree in sustainable food and farming. The degree will cover basic knowledge of plant and soil science, and train students in agricultural techniques, community development, public policy and education. Portland State U Launches Food Systems Certificate Program
Portland State University has launched a new program that prepares students to work on contemporary food systems issues in a variety of sectors and industries. The Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Food Systems will educate students on topics ranging from business and urban planning to policy and public health, providing a multi-dimensional understanding of the social, environmental, and economic impacts of the food sector.

The SISE Program
The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week intensive workshop and lecture series for students and professionals at the University of Illinois at Chicago. From August 4-16, a diverse body of participants will engage a broad spectrum of energy and sustainability-related topics through daily presentations, collaborative projects, mentoring activities, site visits, and networking opportunities with leading research institutions and companies in the digital technology and energy sectors. Permaculture Film Series
Common Ground Center is offering a permaculture film and discussion series on Tuesdays from 6:00-7:30 PM during winter quarter. Education for Sustainable Living Program Team (ESLP)
ESLP is looking for engaged students who wish to be a part of the organizing team for the next year. Ideally, students will shadow current positions this winter quarter to gain skills and training to carry on into the 2016-2017 year.

Open positions include:

• Collaboration and networking sphere organizers: organizers work together to design and create colorful advertisement flyers for the organization. Regular maintenance of the ESLP website, Facebook page, and registering for on-campus events are other collaboration and networking sphere duties. The goal for this sphere is to increase awareness of ESLP, outreach for student facilitators, and Spring Speaker Series students.

• Academic Sphere organizers: organizers meet every 11-12:10am MWF for the Winter Training Seminar (WTS) to facilitate a group of students in preparation for their spring Action Research Teams. This group of organizers works closely with admin to build relationships and harbor the skills necessary for leading a successful action project.

• Heart Sphere organizers: Heart sphere organizers work closely with ESLP's staff advisor, Angela Harris, to manage our budget and personnel responsibilities. These organizers work all of Winter quarter contacting and booking guest speakers for the Spring Speaker Series.

Sustainability Studies Minor
The minor incorporates courses offered by College Eight and departments across campus, student-initiated classes through the Education for Sustainable Living Program, and an interdisciplinary capstone. The minor is open to all UCSC students. For more information, click here.

Cultivating a Daily Revolution: What's in Your Melting Pot?
Histories of Food in the USA: Wednesdays, 6-8 PM This 2 unit seminar and internship series discusses the social, economic and political conditions that give rise to the food cultures seen in the United States today. Working at the intersection of social justice and environmental justice, discussions (following a free weekly meal) aim to locate histories of food, ethnobotany and oppositionality in today's neoliberal socio-economic climate. The World Cafe: Food, Tea, Conversations That Matter
Mondays 5-7pm in the Kresge Seminar Room 159 The World Cafe is a weekly potluck of both food and ideas. It aims to bring a diversity of people together to explore whatever topics matter to them. Each night is focused on a different theme, often proposed by a student club or passionate individual wanting to develop their conversational leadership. Attendees savor the inquiry as they savor the food and tea, connect deeply with one another, form friendships, move projects forward, and create actionable knowledge. The World Cafe is a process used around the globe to surface the collective intelligence of groups of all sizes.

Divestment Student Network People Of Color Caucus
The People of Color Caucus is a place for organizers of color in the divestment movement to meet, collaborate on shared projects, and support each other to build the Climate Justice movement the world needs. UCSC Farm featured in the New York Times

Mark Bittman, the New York Times lead food columnist, visited the farm at the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at the University of California, Santa Cruz and interviewed Daniel Press, the center’s executive director and Tim Galarneau, a coordinator with Food Systems Working Group. The Homeslice CSA: Registration Now Open
The Pie Ranch in Pescadero is expanding their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) to include Santa Cruz and Davenport. As a CSA member, you will receive a weekly delivery of organically grown produce. You can either sign up for half a season for $312 or a full season for $600. The boxes come with vegetables, leafy greens, herbs, wheat flour or berries, dry beans, seasonal fruit and eggs available on request. Register to be a CSA here.

Climate & Energy Analyst (Sustainability Office)
This paid student position supports the implementation of energy efficient projects through auditing, diagnostic software and data logging equipment. Compile results of building surveys, analyze trends, energy issues, optimize system selection and gather and analyze greenhouse gas emission data to support campus climate action plan. Carbon Fund Outreach Coordinator (Sustainability Office)
This paid student position provides outreach and communications, attends pertinent events and classes. They act as a liaison between the community and Carbon Fund projects. Student must intimately understand funded Carbon Fund projects and track their individual accomplishments. The position also requires extensive reporting, documentation and administrative duties. Carbon Fund Student Facilitator (Sustainability Office)
The Carbon Fund student facilitator coordinates Carbon Fund committee meetings, works with applicants who are applying for Carbon Fund monies, tracks budgets and expenses for projects, and is the main point of contact for the Carbon Fund. Student Sustainability Advisors
SSAs are needed for the 2015-2016 school year, and applications are now open. SSAs work with Residential Life and students in on-campus housing to support sustainability efforts, behaviors, and events. SSAs must live on campus during the school year and be able to commit to arriving early in September for training. The SSA position is a school year-long commitment, and compensation includes a quarterly stipend of $1,500 and meals during early move-in. Apply through ER #7056.

Get Involved with UC Global Food Initiative

On July 1, 2014, President Janet Napolitano announced the Global Food Initiative, which will aim to address global issues in the food system. All 10 UC's will be working collectively towards this effort to support sustainable agriculture, healthy eating, and food security.  

UC Santa Cruz will be playing a critical role in this effort with the support of the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) and Daniel Press, Executive Director of CASFS and Professor of the Environmental Studies Department. Daniel Press serves as the campus lead for UCSC in the GFI steering committee. Throughout the upcoming academic year students will be plugged in to subcommittees to uphold this initiative. Join the Student Environmental Center, Students for Organic Solutions (SOS), the Food Systems Working Group (FSWG), Program in Community and Agriculture (PICA), and Community Agroecology Network/AgroEco Coffee (CAN) in a discussion about our campus and community-wide food systems and opportunities to make them more sustainable.

• Students for Organic Solutions: Students for Organic Solutions (SOS) is a group of students committed to raising awareness on the impacts of our current food system, as well as increasing participation and engagement in sustainable food practices. We work to bring about environmental change through on-campus food systems.
• The Food Systems Working Group: The College Food Systems initiative at UC Santa Cruz links the Center’s Farm on the UCSC campus with other local organic farms and with UCSC campus organizations to bring organic produce to the campus dining halls and restaurants, while bringing students to CASFS for sustainable food systems education and engagement.
• Program in Community and Agroecology: PICA's primary academic mission is to engage students with sustainability through practical experience and the sharing of community based knowledge. Through seminars, practical training in agroecology and organic gardening, student involvement in campus and community gardens, and the development of local composting projects, PICA students are able to integrate classroom instruction with hands-on learning.
• Community Agroecology Network/AgroEco Coffee: CAN/FoCAN is an international organization actively working in eight regions of Mexico and Central America. We confront social, economic, and environmental injustice through research, education, and action. CAN partners with community-based organizations, farmers’ cooperatives, nonprofits, and universities to generate local approaches to sustainable development.

UCSC Farm Hosts Fall Harvest Festival on Sunday, October 12

Fall has arrived and it’s time to celebrate the changing seasons at the 20th annual Fall Harvest Festival, coming up on Sunday, October 12, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at UC Santa Cruz’s 30-acre organic farm.

The festival features live music from marimba to reggae to bluegrass, including a headliner performance by Dylan McDonald and the Avians. Also on tap: hay rides, kids’ crafts, workshops, pumpkin and produce sales, and campus and community group information tables.Visitors of all ages are invited to sample apples and roasted pepper varieties, enter the pie baking contest, try their hand at pressing cider, scale the climbing wall, pick sunflowers and make a "bike smoothie" as part of the "Food, What?!" youth group's fundraiser, and enjoy locally sourced, tasty treats.

Workshops on making guacamole, growing and using peppers, saving seeds, baking apple crisp using acorn flower and a solar oven, and preparing your garden for fall and winter are also on the schedule, along with farm tours and an herb walk through the garden.

Admission is free for UCSC students, kids 12 and under, and members of the Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden; general admission is $5. See below for a full schedule of the day's events.

Official Rules for the Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden Apple Pie Contest
Pie entries accepted October 12, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Official judging begins at 12:45 p.m. Winners will be announced at between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

1. The Friends of Farm and Garden Apple Pie Bake-Off is a nonprofessional baking competition open to Harvest Festival attendees (entry to the Harvest Festival is $5; free admission for UCSC students, Friends of the Farm & Garden members and for children 12 and under).

2. Contestants are responsible for submitting a written (preferably typed) recipe with their pie.

3. Contestants are responsible for supplying all ingredients and baking the pie prior to bringing it to the contest.

4. All entries in this contest must be homemade.

5. A representative of the Friends of the Farm & Garden will assign each contestant a number. Contestants should verify that the number on the bottom of their container is the same number assigned by the representative.

6. Contestants’ entries are judged on taste, presentation, and creativity.

7. The decision of the judges shall be final. Pie not consumed during judging will be returned to the contestant.
