Summer Internship Opportunity with Sustain Magazine

The following internship opportunity was submitted to the Sustainability Office: 

Sustain - Northern California’s Green Living Magazine, based in Santa Cruz, is poised to launch its its first issue this summer. With an initial circulation of 10,000 copies, Sustain will be the Northern California’s source for practical tips and authoritative information for the environmentally conscious consumer. This magazine is rich with locally relevant content and photography to creatively inspire and enable the reader to gain a deeper understanding of issues, actions, and products and lead a sustainable lifestyle.

We are data driven and rely on creative infographics to simply convey quick facts and figures. In an era of green washing and confusing branding messages, our magazine will be the No. 1 source for environmental news and sustainability tips readers can trust. Our magazine is also distinguished by the fact that we systematically track our carbon footprint and locally offset whatever is left of it after we implement sustainable supply chain and operational practices - and we share those metrics with our readers.

We are seeking 1 to 2 interns for the summer to assist with and gain experience in both the artistic and operational elements of the magazine launch. Specifically, we are interested in working with interns who are interested in the intersect between art and environmental issues, have a positive attitude, are hardworking and possess one of more of the following skills:

• Designing visually clean and compelling infographics 
• InDesign for print layout 
• Unique and engaging web design/layout 
• Contact relationship management systems 
• Social Media management for organizations 

This is a summer internship and unpaid. However, depending on potential intern interests, we can offer internships for-credit. Most work will be completed independently with biweekly work session meetings to be scheduled with the magazine founders at a mutually convenient time and location. There is the potential for these internships to continue past the summer with compensation. Volunteer in the Arboretum Eucalyptus Grove: Mondays 9 AM
Help out the Arboretum at UC Santa Cruz as a volunteer in the Eucalyptus Grove. The group meets on Mondays from 9 AM until noon in the Eucalyptus Grove, opposite Western Drive. Parking is available in the Grove for these Monday morning work parties. Please bring hat, gloves, water, and layers of clothing. Tools will be provided.

Natives First Gardeners at the Arboretum: Tuesdays 9 AM
This weeding group was formed to help with the Entrance Native Garden at the Arboretum on Tuesday mornings at 9 AM. Enjoy a friendly group, and get involved in beautifying this ongoing project while enjoying the beauty of the California Native collection. Bring gloves, water, and sun protection. Friends of Community Agroecology Network Celebration Dinner: Tuesday, June 5, 6-8 PM

FoCAN is a student-initiated, student-led community at UCSC that supports CAN's mission of promoting rural livelihoods and sustainable food systems through action education and participatory action research. Join FoCAN for their end-of-the-year celebration on Tuesday, June 5, to have a potluck and celebrate FoCAN and the community they have fostered throughout the quarter. Natural History Club: Wednesdays at 4 PM
The Natural History Club is all about exploring the natural spaces on and around our beautiful campus. They go on hikes around campus, learning about its natural history. They focus on learning plants, birds, animal tracking, mushrooms, and anything they discover. Overall the club seeks to deepen members' understanding, awareness and connection with nature. Student Environmental Center: Wednesdays 6:30-8:30 PM

The purpose of the Student Environmental Center is to promote student involvement through research, education, and implementation of environmentally sustainable practices on campus in collaboration with the university. Path to a Greener Stevenson: Thursdays 8-9 PM
Path to a Greener Stevenson (PTAGS) meets in the Stevenson House 2 lounge. They are currently working on a pilot program to remove paper towels from the dorms, as well as planning end-of-the-year swap meets. The Gardeners' Alliance is a group within SEC's Students for Organic campaign that works to  promote the campus gardens and unite the garden-friendly community by creating a space to promote and share information between campus gardeners and the students of UCSC. They are currently working on expanding the Stevenson Garden, piloting a paper towel reduction campaign in the Stevenson sustainability themed dorm, and collaborating with the Stevenson Coffee House to increase its sustainability efforts. Guided Nature Walks with Campus Natural Reserves Steward: Every Other Friday 
Our campus does not end at the buildings, so come explore the variety of vivacious ecosystems and what inhabits them! Guided Nature Walks will leave from College 8 Red Room on May 11 and May 25 from 2-4 PM. Please check out the flyer for details. The Program in Community and Agroecology (PICA) will be joining in with Dining Services' Farm Fridays by hosting an informational table at various dining halls on April 6 and 13. PICA is located in the Village and its focus is teaching students about sustainability and community food systems. Stop by to learn about all the PICA program has to offer you, from its themed campus housing option in the Village to its free Saturday Garden Play Days.
