February 2017: Internships, Employment, and Volunteering

Internships:

Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program: Deadline February 12
The Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program (2-year program, UCSC) is launching recruitment for its 2017 class of Scholars. Their goal is to recruit 20 freshman/sophomore students from underrepresented groups across disciplines with the highest potential to make sustained contributions as conservation innovators and leaders. The scholarship covers all program expenses and provides each Scholar with a $4000 stipend during each of their two summers. Chancellor's Undergraduate Internship Program: Deadline February 16 at 5:00pm
The Chancellor's Undergraduate Internship Program (CUIP) provides students with on-campus internships in programs and departments throughout the campus. Interns work with a mentor to develop personal and professional skills, and take a leading role in producing project in their internship. Enrollment in a two-unit leadership seminar class is required for fall, winter and spring quarters. A scholarship of $8,200 is paid towards the intern's registration fees for the academic year.  Application must include at least two letters of recommendation. Visit the CUIP webpage for full details or to apply.

UC Student Regent & UC Student Advisor to the Regents: Deadline February 26
The Board of Regents are looking for two students to represent UCSC. The Student Regent is a full voting member of the Board of Regents and attends all meetings of the Board and its Committees during their one-year term commencing July 1, 2018. The Student Advisor the the Regents is an experimental, non-voting position that advises the Regents on student issues. View the application for full details.



American Indian Resource Center Intern: Deadline June 16
The American Indian Resource Center is dedicated to supporting the needs of American Indian students and increasing Native visibility on campus by advocating students centered programs, cultural events, and tools for academic success. University of New Hampshire Sustainability Project Fellowships: Deadline February 17

The Student Farm at UC Davis (SF) is seeking a new director to lead the continued development of the SF as a learning community where students from many disciplines work to create, maintain and explore sustainable food systems on a 20+ acre farm. A key component of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute (ASI), the SF has served UC Davis students and faculty and the public with educational, research, and outreach opportunities focused on sustainable agriculture and food systems for 40 years. Fund for the Public Interest
Fund for the Public Interest is a national, non-profit organization that builds the people power for America’s leading environmental and social change organizations. They are hiring for a number of positions, including Canvass Director. Here in Santa Cruz the Fund is working with Environment California on our campaign to save the bees. UCSC Campus Clean-ups: February 4, 26
The Zero Waste Team invites you to their sister college cleanups this quarter! There will be two cleanups in February, the first at Rachel Carson/Oakes on Saturday, February 4th and the second at Cowell/Stevenson on Sunday, February 26th. For the first clean-up, meet at the RCC/Oakes Dining Hall at around 10:30am for a quick "trash talker" training about what items go into what streams. The cleanup will start at 11:00am and finish up at around 12:00pm to enjoy a snack, a raffle, and weigh the trash collected! View the Zero Waste Team's flyer for more information.



Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Docent Training: February 4
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary docent training program prepares volunteer docents to interpret the natural and cultural resources of the Sanctuary. A non-mandatory informational meeting will be held Feb 4 at 10:30 am at the Sanctuary Exploration Center, 35 Pacific Avenue. Visit the Sanctuary's website for more information or to apply.

Land Trust Santa Cruz County Antonelli Pond Clean-up: February 12

Internships:

Zero Waste Team: Deadline January 9
The Sustainability Office's Zero Waste Team is looking for two dedicated for-credit interns that are interested in gaining professional experience and are passionate about waste reduction on the UCSC campus.  The first position is the   UC Office of the President (UCOP) Zero Waste Outreach Intern who will assist in the planning and rollout of the UCOP Zero Waste Communications Campaign.  The second position is the Campus Clean Up Intern who will assist in the facilitation of College Campus Clean Ups and the 3rd Annual campus-wide Campus Clean Up.  Full details available on the flyer.  For questions, or to apply (brief cover letter and resume required) email Angela Duong at antrduon[at]ucsc[dot]edu.

Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems
CASFS is offering on-campus, lower division farm and garden internships.  5-unit applicants are preferred, but 2-unit applicants may also be accepted.  At least 80% of internship will consist of outdoor fieldwork.  Internship applicants need to be prepared and enthused to work outdoors in occasionally uncomfortable weather conditions. Green Labs Team: Deadline January 20

Community Environmental Council
The Community Environmental Council the northern division of a 4-county partnership spearheaded by the LA Cleantech Incubator.  LACI helps grow green businesses by offering office space, mentoring, and access to capital. This partnership is looking for a regional director who will build, connect and support the clean energy entrepreneur ecosystem throughout Santa Barbara, Ventura.  Qualified applicants should have experience in green energy business.  Complete information is available on LACI's website. Active Transportation Manager at University of Utah: Deadline December 16th
The University of Utah Sustainability Office is looking for an Active Transportation Manager to support and grow initiatives in sustainable transportation. SunWork Renewable Energy Projects
SunWork is a non-profit that installs rooftop PV systems on small-energy-footprint homes with the help of volunteers. SunWork is offering training sessions that cover the basics of solar, electricity, construction, and safety issues. Completion of this three-hour training qualifies volunteers to participate in SunWork's solar installations. Training sessions will be held on December 10th from 9am - Noon in San Jose, and December 17th from 2pm - 5pm in Berkeley. Santa Cruz training sessions are to-be-announced. Destination Higher Education
The African/Black Student Alliance's Program Destination Higher Education (DHE) is looking for interns. DHE introduces newly admitted students to the African/Black community and student life on the UC Santa Cruz campus. DHE provides personal, social, and academic workshops that focus on the Black Experience at UC Santa Cruz and are presented by African/Black students at UC Santa Cruz. Bayview Elementary DROPS Program
Bayview Elementary School has partnered with students of the UCSC IDEASS program to aid in their water conservation initiative. They are currently seeking students for internship positions collaborating with the city and local professionals, and conducting water/soil testing or infiltration studies. Students from all majors and interests are encouraged to apply.  All internships are offered for academic credit (ENVS 183 or CLEI 150), with the possibility of paid positions for some interns.  For more information, email Tamara Ball.

National Outdoor Leadership School: Deadline November 4
NOLS is seeking a Sustainability Intern to work at their headquarters in Lander, WY from January to May 2017. This paid NOLS sustainability intern will assist the environmental stewardship & sustainability director and sustainability coordinator with a variety of tasks related to sustainability initiatives at NOLS, community outreach, and public policy. Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition Education Programs Coordinator: Deadline November 23
Based out of San Jose, CA, the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition is an organization that serves to create a healthy community, environment, and economy through bicycling for people who live, work, or play in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties.  The Coalition is hiring an Education Programs Coordinator, who will develop bike to school programs, coordinate with partner organizations, and instruct driver education classes.  Applicants should have a bachelor's degree in a related field and experience with bicycles and education. Remove Invasive Plants with Land Trust of Santa Cruz County: November 12
Land Trust of Santa Cruz County is a local conservation group that protects, cares for, and connects people to the extraordinary lands that make this area special.  The Trust is in need of volunteers to help remove invasive plants from the Randall Morgan Sandhills Preserve in Scotts Valley (9250 Geyer Rd). The "broom pull" will be November 12 from 9am to noon.  Volunteers should bring sturdy boots, weather-protective clothing, water, and a lunch. "Put A Price On It" Campaign
In partnership with Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL),  this campaign is currently looking for students to help with climate solution efforts on campuses across the country. The goal of the campaign is to put a price on carbon pollution and secure our transition to a 100% clean energy economy. The campaign elevates the importance of carbon pricing through film, social media, and celebrity endorsements, while empowering students to participate in the democratic process and become more skilled in civic engagement. Volunteer at the Bike Santa Cruz County Annual Dinner: December 4
The Bike Santa Cruz County Annual Dinner & Auction returns this holiday season on Sunday, December 4th from 5:00-8:00pm at the Food Lounge in downtown Santa Cruz. They need help with this fundraising event celebrating their 2016 accomplishments and Santa Cruz County's top bicycle advocates. There will be live music, a silent auction, and catered food. Global Food Initiative Internships
The UCSC Global Food Initiative team is currently recruiting for two internships. The positions available are the Food Workshop Coordinator and the Food Distribution/Pantry Coordinator, which address student food access and security, as well as overall well-being on campus. Produce Pop-Up Stand Internship
The Food Systems Working Group is looking for two driven individuals to assist with the weekly organic Produce Pop-Up in Quarry Plaza. Responsibilities will include outreach and collaboration efforts, budget and finance planning, and overall assistance in weekly preparation and operation of the Produce Pop-Up stand. Save The Waves Development Research Assistant
The Davenport-based organization Save The Waves has an opening for an intern to serve as the team’s development research assistant for 15-20 hours/week. The intern will support institutional fundraising, donor research, data management, maintaining and improving database functionality, and data integrity to create systems to support fundraising growth and innovation.  Job description available here. Leedscape Planning and Design Co.
Leedscape Planning, a landscape architecture firm based out of Beijing, is looking for interns with experience in ecological restoration to help improve China's green infrastructure.  Leedscape is open to two forms of paid collaboration. Action Education Coordinator for Friends of Community Agroecology Network

Open Streets Santa Cruz: October 9

Fall Bike To Work / School Day: October 6
The Sustainability Office is hosting the Main Entrance to UCSC site for Fall Bike to Work/School Day this Thursday. We are looking for more volunteers to hand out free breakfast to bicyclists and talk about bicycle advocacy from 6:30 - 9:30 AM--you can sign up for one hour or more.  More information is on the website here. Green Builder Internship
Long Way Home is seeking interns to learn and apply green construction methods in San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala.  Interns will experience various alternative construction methods, depending on the time of their visit including pounding tires with rammed earth, using bottles stuffed with trash to form fences, creating and placing glass bottle bricks, or harvesting cactus pads for a natural sealant.  Applications are accepted year-round.  Internships may be as short as one week to as long as three months.  No qualifications needed, but experience in construction, education, and Spanish will be valuable.  Cost is $75 per week.  To volunteer, contact Ariel Wexler at Volunteer[at]lwhome[dot]org or apply at the website here.

Long Way Home NGO Internship in Guatemala
Long Way Home is offering an internship in San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala to anyone interested in managing a grassroots organization.  Responsibilities include fundraising, marketing, bookkeeping, reporting, and managing resources. Biology Laboratory Coordinator

The Keck Science Department, which houses the biology, chemistry, environmental science, and physics faculty for Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges (three of the five undergraduate Claremont Colleges), seeks to fill the position of Biology Laboratory Coordinator, to begin immediately. The Coordinator will oversee the set-up and preparation of the laboratory curriculum for the department’s Introductory Biology laboratories, will manage and train undergraduate teaching assistants, will work collaboratively with faculty teaching in the laboratories, and will teach two laboratory sections per semester. This is a one-year, full time position with the possibility of renewal based on performance and departmental needs. A Master’s degree in Biology or related interdisciplinary field is required.

Research Opportunity at Northern Illinois University

The following information was submitted to the Sustainability Office on behalf of Dr. Holly Jones of Northern Illinois University:

We seek a motivated Ph.D. student to develop a dissertation research project utilizing data from the Lake County Forest Preserve District (LCFPD) Long-Term Wildlife Monitoring Program to assess outcomes and identify successful strategies for meeting restoration and management targets. The LCFPD has substantial data on wildlife populations (especially small mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians), land cover, and management history, which will allow the student to pursue unique and important questions about restoration ecology and habitat management.

The student will work under the guidance of ecologists and restoration biologists at Northern Illinois University, Dr. Nick Barber (http://niu.edu/biology/about/faculty/barber/Barber_Lab/Home.html), Dr. Holly Jones (http://niu.edu/biology/about/faculty/jones/jones_lab/index.html), and Dr. Rich King (http://niu.edu/biology/about/faculty/rking/index.shtml), and with managers at LCFPD.

Prospective students should be comfortable working during inclement weather, possess a valid driver’s license, and be willing to oversee a small team of field technicians. Competitive candidates will have a Master’s degree and strong GRE scores. Experience with mark-recapture methods, occupancy modeling, and wildlife management is desirable. The position will include stipend and tuition remission, with a starting date of August 2016 or January 2017.

Northern Illinois University is a 20,000-student research university in DeKalb, Illinois, a diverse community of 50,000 with a low cost of living. The Department of Biological Sciences includes faculty with a wide range of research interests, including an active Ecology, Evolution, Behavior, and Conservation research concentration.

Provost Sustainability Internship - $1500 + 12 units! Deadline Extended to May 4
Are you interested in working to make our campus more environmentally and socially sustainable? The PSI program is a great way to get involved! The program pairs students with staff and faculty mentors to plan and implement a year-long campus sustainability project. Students receive internship credit and a $1500 scholarship upon completion of the program. Environmental Studies Senior Exit credit can be fulfilled with this program. There are 12 internships available for next year, which are described on the website. Applications are due May 4 and there is a mandatory info session on May 4th from 4-6pm. Support Zero Waste Commencement 2016
The Sustainability Office Zero Waste Team is coordinating a team of "trash talkers" for Commencement weekend. These "trash talkers" will interact with families and friends of graduates to educate them about how to properly dispose of waste in correct bins--compost, recycling, and landfill. Volunteers will sign up for 4-hour shifts and training will be provided in advance. Earth Day Santa Cruz is an annual event to raise environmental awareness; address concerns; showcase solutions; and present balanced modes of living for the well-being of each individual, the community, and the planet. Earth Day Santa Cruz needs about 75 volunteers to help promote, set up and support the booths at the event. Second Annual Campus Cleanup Day
The Campus Cleanup Committee is happy to announce the Second Annual Campus Cleanup Day on May 1st, 2016 from 10am-1pm. The purpose of this event is to bring students and campus users together to shed light on the littering issues on campus and to help preserve the beauty of this campus. Last year 150 volunteers collected 285 pounds of litter! This year we are hoping to involve more students and campus users to make this event an even greater success.
To start our day, we will enjoy breakfast at the Quarry Plaza including Santa Cruz Bagelry bagels, fresh fruit and other snacks. In addition, the first 125 participants will receive a FREE Campus Cleanup t-shirt.  To register for this exciting event CLICK HERE!
